Walk at Beaver Brook North, May 24, 2021
May 31, 2021
On May 24, a dozen folks meet at Elsie Turner playground for a trek over Mackerel Hill into Beaver Brook North Reservation. The walk had been advertised as a "Fungi Foray," but the lack of rain greatly lessened the chance of seeing mushrooms, so our expert mycologist didn't join us. Instead, WLT ED Sonja Wadman led the group through a forest of thick poison ivy-vined trees over to the Met Fern cemetery, where we discussed the Gann Academy's effort to document and recognize the hundreds of people buried there in unmarked graves. Learn more at www.metferncemetery.org/. We did see many pretty plants and insects along the way, including several lady slippers!

Over 60 nature lovers of all ages came to Christ Church for a program with Rick Roth the Snake Man and the Cape Ann Vernal Pool Team . We were introduced to many snakes found in New England and the world. Members of the team walked through the audience with them so everyone could see up close and take photos. Afterwards, brave people who wanted to hold the legless reptiles were given that opportunity. Many thanks to the Waltham Cultural Council for supporting this event!
