Beaver Brook Historic Reservation Walk, December 14, 2024
December 29, 2024
It was a chilly but sunny day as fifteen people strolled around the southern part of BBH Reservation, the first park established by the Commonwealth in 1893. We admired many special trees, briefly crossed over Beaver Brook into Belmont, and learned that the non-profit that would be become The Trustees of Reservations was formed in 1892 to save the endangered Waverly Oak–making it the first conservation group in the country. A few days after the walk, a news piece about how the state is digitizing its historic documents highlighted plans of BBH, then called Beaver Brook Oaks! Note how they are marked Plan #1 for the state in 1893!

Over 60 nature lovers of all ages came to Christ Church for a program with Rick Roth the Snake Man and the Cape Ann Vernal Pool Team . We were introduced to many snakes found in New England and the world. Members of the team walked through the audience with them so everyone could see up close and take photos. Afterwards, brave people who wanted to hold the legless reptiles were given that opportunity. Many thanks to the Waltham Cultural Council for supporting this event!
