BY CYD ABNET ● ENVIRONMENT ● JULY 19, 2026 The drought has significantly affected Waltham’s local flora and fauna. According to Waltham Land Trust Executive Director Sonja Wadman, the effects are cascading. “Water sources like the Charles River, Hardy Pond and our brooks shrink, resulting in concentrated amounts of pollutants and exposing critical habitat for fish, migrating birds and amphibians found along the edges of waterways and in wetlands,” she explained. Wadman also noted that trees and plants are affected by the lack of water and often die as a result. “Our volunteer trail and land restoration stewards are very busy trying their best to keep our recently planted and even more established vegetation moist,” she said.
26 people and one dog enjoyed lemonade, snacks, games, and conversation at the historic Wellington Fields parcel on Trapelo Road. Mort Isaacson provided an update on projects happening around the house, and a few folks braved the rain for a quick walk around the parcel to admire the landscape being transformed by the WLT colunteer stewards, in coordination with the City of Waltham's Recreation Department. Waltham Fields Community Farm welcomed Waltham Land Trust along with UMass Grow for their annual land walk exploring the rich agricultural history of the farm fields at 240 Beaver Street. Stewarded by Waltham Fields Community Farm, this land has played an important role in Waltham’s farming heritage for generations. This event was free and open to the public. A huge thank you to our featured speakers Sonja Wadman, Dee Kricker, and Stacey Daley!
About 22 children and their parents joined WLT Board Director Deb Herman on a guided nature walk along the Mass Central Rail Trail for families. The group met at the AutoZone lot on Lexington Street and walked east towards Lyman Street. Many youngsters were very excited to learn about native plants; all were thrilled with the prizes they got at the end--small animal figurines for the littles and bird houses for older kids.
Unwound, relaxed, and unplugged while enjoying a gentle and restorative yoga session outdoors at the Land Trust's Lakeview Preserve on the west shore of Hardy Pond. Laura Arena, a popular instructor at the Waltham YMCA, led participants through a series of stretches, held poses, and deep breathing exercises as everyone admired the pond before the sun set.

WLT was very excited to be a partner in this reboot of the old Riverfest. Many people stopped by our outreach table, and about 15 people joined in our nature/history walks along the Charles. On the second stroll, we were treated to wildlife sightings: a Great blue heron, turtles, and a cormorant! We loved the multi-cultural music and cuisine that was offered all day long. Can't wait for next year!
Over twenty people celebrated National Trails Day by removing litter with stewards from the Waltham Land Trust from along the Mass Central Rail Trail (MCRT) between Hammond Street and the reNEW apartment complex east of Linden Street. We were thrilled to see nature as well! Many thanks to everyone who helped. Remember, you can park in designated Rail Trail spots along the path in the AutoZone lot on weekends!
