Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the Waltham Land Trust?
A: We are a private, non-profit charitable organization dedicated to preserving open space in Waltham.

Q: How did the WLT get started?
A. Back in the 1990’s eleven individuals from different parts of the city came together to consider how we could more effectively protect the remaining natural spaces in Waltham. We were incorporated as the non-profit Waltham Land Trust in 1999.

Q: What is your purpose?
A: Our mission, in brief, is to save open space in our city. This involves acquiring new land as well as preserving and restoring existing parcels. Our full mission is found at

Q: What are your current projects?
A. We have two priorities. First, is our mission to preserve city-owned green spaces through state-sanctioned conservation restrictions. Our second priority, to expand our membership, will help us achieve our first.

Q: What are some of your past accomplishments?
A. We have established a set of criteria to evaluate parcels of land and water for their environmental value. All open parcels 4-acres or larger have been ranked using these criteria. Of our top ten priority parcels, the city has acquired five to date, totaling 98.7 acres. See for more detail.

Additionally, the WLT played a key part in the passage of the Community Preservation Act in Waltham. This law matches local funds spent on open space protection (as well as historic preservation and community housing) with state funds.

Q: What activities do you offer?
A: Lots! An on-going goal of ours is to enhance the public's appreciation of Waltham's natural resources. With this in mind the WLT leads walks through our green spaces, holds seminars on important environmental issues, and hosts canoe and kayak outings. There is always an available listing of upcomng events at

Our fundraisers offer a good time, too. We’ve enjoyed "Full Moon Madness" benefits at Margaritas and WLT nights at the Chateau as well as a Green Space Blues Jam at the Paine Estate (Stonehurst). This year we will have a fall fundraiser on Nov. 6 evening featuring Jimmy Tingle.

Q: How can I find out more?
A: For details on these events and more, look in more detail at our website: to learn about current and recent activities, newsletters, and upcoming events. Be sure to sign up to receive our regular email mailings to keep up-to-date.

Q: How can I get involved?
A: Several committees await your participation! Consider joining one of these committees: Special Events, Land, Program/Membership, or Newsletter. If you enjoy working outdoors, you may want to help with trail marking and maintenance. Go to our website and follow the links for volunteers to find out more about the committees and their work.

Q: I don't have much spare time, but I want to help. What can I do?
A: Become a member! Nothing helps our mission more than a vibrant, broad-based membership. Individual one-year memberships are only $25.00 - less for students and senior citizens. And come to our annual meeting in the fall. You’ll meet some of the people who make WLT what it is today.
